Children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Faith City Ministries places special emphasis on caring for and nurturing the ones that come to live in the Family Lighthouse.
A tutor is available weekly, provided by the school district. Tutoring helps make up for the gaps in education caused by the child's changing location, which is usually the case with homeless children.
School age children are often embarrassed by the fact that they are homeless. The school district therefore picks up children from the Family Lighthouse first and drops them off last, which conceals where they are living from the peers. This makes for a long school day with a bus trip beginning sometimes at 7:00 a.m. and ending near 5:00 p.m.
Interjecting fun and games into their evening is important. Each weekday following dinner and a short ministry time, the children are provided with activities, which include painting, pottery, puppets and games. The Family Lighthouse houses a secure playground area, which is soon to be enlarged.
Youth groups come during the summer from local churches to have Vacation Bible School and a weekly Kid's Club, which involves games and fellowship. Field trips for the children include pool parties and museum visits.
